Candles have been used as a source of light and celebratory instruments for thousands of years. The earliest use of candles is often attributed to the Ancient Egyptians, who made rushlights or torches by soaking the core reeds and bark in melted animal fat. Later, the Romans upgraded the original candle to include wicks by dipping rolled papyrus repeatedly in melted beeswax and tallow. These candles were used in religious ceremonies, to light their homes, and to aid travelers at night. Fast forward to 2020 and candles are still a staple in households across the world. Ranging in size, longevity, and fragrance, candles are used for a variety of reasons including decorations, fragrances, meditation, and aromatherapy. No one understands this better than Well Lit Candles. As a small, black woman owned, christian-based business, Well Lit Candles specializes in creating products that use an array of essential and fragrance oils for customers who desire tranquility and strong, soothing scents. They service and ship to customers nationwide, delivering their candles with positive messages in a time when we need these reminders the most.

I love candles and figured I'd start making my own, especially since I wasn't trying to give my money to non-black entities if I could help it. I thought it would be an easy thing to do, too. I've never been more wrong, but I love the challenge of getting recipes and ratios just right. It's like a big chemistry experiment for adults. Mission of Well Lit Candles
Well Lit Candles seeks to help their customers achieve a desired level of wellness through the calming of a lit candle and spiritual inspiration. They believe candles have many therapeutic aspects that help bring peace to one's environment. They also believe that with constant communion with the Prince of Peace, we as individuals can always experience true tranquility. As such, their products always refer to a person, story, or specific scripture in the Bible to give their customers an intentional, spiritual thought they can meditate on when lighting their candles.
"I always said, if I started my own business, it would have to center around God. I believe it helps keep the business and me grounded and focused on the right things," said Peynado. "Since Jesus is the light of the world, it was very organic to relate a lit candle to the light He shines, and the light we should shine for others. 'This Little Light of Mine' is not just a cheery kids' song but rather a directive for how we should live out our lives daily. With Jesus at our center, we will be able to live a life of peace and wellness that can be shared with others."
What's In a Name?
The name Well Lit takes on three intertwined meanings:
The most obvious is that every candle lover respects a candle that is well lit.
When separating the two words, we have well and lit. Well is a reflection of the mission of the business to always seek wellness for the mind, body, and soul. Lit is a reflection of the light of Christ, the light of the world.
Putting the words back together, we essentially connect our wellness to the light of Jesus. With Him as our source, we can be assured of the longevity of our health and wellness.

About the Founder and Company History
Monica Peynado was born and raised in Houston, Texas, "the greatest place on earth" as she puts it. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering from THE Howard University and a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University. She has been working for Accenture for the last six years and currently holds the title of Management Consulting Manager. She also supports her mother's Girl Scouts troop and tutors grade school students in various mathematics courses.
Peynado's interest in health and wellness started with working out, then the better eating habits came. She saw a path she could potentially be headed towards and decided she wanted a different trajectory for her life, one she could pass along to others. She's always been an advocate for taking care of yourself and making the right decisions for your body and mind. When the Covid-19 pandemic spread rapidly in America, Peynado began to experience some mental drainage. Add to that the continued civil injustices manifesting themselves, and she found that she was just fully overwhelmed. Peynado knew she had to turn to God in order to bring herself back together.
She began doing her daily devotions again. After a week, she felt a weight lifted off of her, so she knew she was on the right path. She also wanted to engage in an activity that could help with stress relief. One day, she decided she was going to make candles. What started as just a hobby, quickly grew into a business as she wanted to be able to share this new found peace and wellness with others. She hopes she can help her customers growing closer to God and find the same peace and wellness that she finds in Him through the light of a candle.

"I hope I'm able to help others accept Jesus and/or build a stronger relationship with Him through the scriptures I recommend or the posts I put out to the website or social media. I hope my candles can help give others the same peace of mind I was seeking when faced with hard times. At the end of the day, my purpose in this world is to share Jesus with others. Well Lit Candles allows me to take something as simple as a candle and use it to reflect the light of Jesus, something we are all seeking (whether we know it or not) and something that can give us peace and wellness."
